Man charged with felony assault after incident with knife in SE Olympia

Olympia officers arrested a man last Tuesday after he was reported to be acting suspiciously, throwing rocks at cars, and lunged at a man with a knife.

Calls began coming in about the man at 9:00 pm on Tuesday, April 20th. 911 callers stated that he was screaming obscenities, yelling for help, and holding a knife. He made his way from the area of Buckingham Drive to the Boulevard Rd/Log Cabin roundabout.

911 callers began to report that he was throwing rocks and chasing vehicles. Finally, a caller who was on foot in the area reported that the suspect had advanced on him with a knife in his hand.

Officers arrived in the area and ordered the suspect on the ground. He complied, but yelled at officers to shoot him and yelled obscenities at the victim. The suspect was found to be sweaty and bleeding from his head. Medics were called to evaluate him. Officers believe that he was under the influence of narcotics or suffering from a mental disorder based on his behavior.

One witness was interviewed who told officers that the suspect had thrown a large rock at his vehicle, causing multiple large dents and was close to smashing out the window.

The main victim told officers that he was running in the area when he saw the male acting erratically in the middle of the road. The suspect began to approach the victim in a threatening manner with a knife in his hand. The suspect was within six feet of him and lunged at him with the knife multiple times.

The victim was able to tell officers where the suspect discarded the knife, and they located it. They also found a knife sheath on his person.

The suspect was booked into the Thurston County Jail for Assault 1st Degree. Prosecutors ultimately decided to charge him with Assault 2nd Degree. He is being held in the Thurston County Jail on $5,000 bail.

Wild police chase of stolen vehicle ends with PIT maneuver

Thurston County deputies arrested a woman last week after she led them on a wild chase around Lacey in a stolen car.

Just before 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 21st, a narcotics detective called dispatch to advise that he spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of Martin Way and Galaxy Dr in Lacey. A patrol deputy in a marked vehicle turned around and came into the area and saw the vehicle go into a ditch and go airborne – and the chase was on.

The female driver took off at a high rate of speed westbound on Martin Way to Kingham St, where she turned north and into the neighborhood behind Winco. She eventually entered the Winco Foods parking lot.

She came back out onto Martin Way and entered the Tanglewilde neighborhood, where she continued to drive at high speeds and attempt to evade the pursuing Deputies. At one point, she was approximately two feet away from striking several pedestrians with the vehicle.

She ended up on Carpenter Rd just north of Pacific Ave where Deputies utilized the Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT Manuever) and spun her car around. She continued to attempt to flee so the Deputies pinned her car in. All three occupants were removed from the vehicle at gunpoint without incident.

The female told Deputies there was a gun in the car and she had pointed it at herself during the pursuit. A search warrant was served on the car and a gun stolen from Shelton was located. The vehicle had been stolen in Tacoma.

The 23 year old female driver was booked into the Thurston County Jail on charges of Eluding Pursuing Police Vehicle, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 1st Degree, Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Possession of Stolen Firearm, and driving on a suspended license.

Man breaks into Tumwater City Hall while police working inside

A 44-year old California man was arrested Tuesday after breaking in to the Tumwater City Hall, which also serves as the city’s police station. At least one officer was working inside when he broke in.

According to the police report, it was just after 10:00 pm on Tuesday, April 20th when officers advised that the fire alarm had activated inside the police station at 555 Israel Rd SW. They requested the fire department respond to check the alarm.

Officers checked for signs of obvious fire, and didn’t find anything. When they went to meet firefighters at the front door, they noticed a window had been popped out of the door frame.

Firefighters were escorted by a police officer as they attempted to find the source of the fire alarm. They went into one room and observed a male sitting on the floor. The officer held the man at gunpoint and requested additional units.

The suspect complied with the officers’ commands and he was taken into custody. They cleared the rest of City Hall and found no additional suspects. They found an additional window had been busted out with a large rock. The male suspect had cuts that were treated by the fire department.

The 44-year old suspect appeared to have arrived to City Hall in a semi truck with an empty trailer, and had left it running in the parking lot. The truck was impounded. The suspect’s home address is in northern California.

The suspect was not eligible for booking in the county jail due to COVID restrictions, but officers requested an exception on the basis of the suspect living in California and not being in a clear mental state. The exception was granted and he was booked into TCSO jail on Burglary 2nd Degree and Malicious Mischief 2nd Degree charges.

The suspect made his preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon where his bail was set at $5,000. His arraignment was set for May 4th.
