The man killed in an early-morning collision caused by a wrong-way DUI driver in Olympia on Friday has been identified by the Washington State Patrol.

He is identified as Gregg M. Hicks, 47, of Shelton. Authorities with the Mason County Coroner’s Office notified Hicks’ next of kin, according to the State Patrol.

Hicks was driving his 1999 Saturn SL2 southbound on US-101 near Shaker Church Rd at 5:09 am Monday, when he was hit head-on by a 2008 Nissan Frontier, being driven northbound in the southbound lanes. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan Frontier, James R. Blair, 53, of Gig Harbor, was arrested for Vehicular Homicide and booked into the Thurston County Jail. Drugs and/or alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

One man is in jail for felony assault after he fired a shot during a protest in downtown Olympia Saturday, according to the Olympia Police Department.

The two opposing groups of protesters first formed near the State Capitol Building, before moving further into downtown and ending up near City Hall, the Police Department said in a tweet.

At one point, a shot was fired from one group into the opposing crowd, the Police Department said. They did not elaborate on which protest group the shooter belonged to, though from witness statements he was a part of the right-wing/pro-Trump group.

He was taken into custody for felony 1st degree assault and 2nd degree assault, according to the Thurston County Jail Roster. OPD said additional charges for reckless endangerment may also be referred to the prosecutor.

OPD also said on Twitter, “We have evidence but would very much like to speak to those present, especially the person who looks to have been injured.”

The protest started around noon, and was over by around 4:00 pm, according to scanner traffic.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating after a man was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon on Littlerock Rd SW near 93rd Ave SW.

Around 12:12 pm, the man was working for a private company, cleaning up an oil spill in a coned-off section near or on the roadway, when a vehicle struck and killed him, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was deceased when first responders arrived, according to scanner traffic.

Thurston County Public Works advised that the roadway would be blocked for an extended period of time, and to use alternate routes.
