Deputies arrest man in Martin Way burglary, find stolen mail in his pocket

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 27-year-old male on suspicion of two counts of 2nd Degree Burglary, Possession of Stolen Mail, and other charges early Wednesday morning.

Deputies were called to the Yamaha Motorsports of Olympia, 6807 Martin Way E, just after 4:00 am Wednesday morning, for a report of a possible burglary. The store owner was watching his surveillance cameras remotely when he discovered a man messing with a fence up against a building.

The male matched the description of a suspect in a burglary at the same location that occurred on October 28, and a theft that occurred on October 29. In the theft incident, the suspect had stolen a black metal carabiner off of the fence.

Deputies detained the man without incident. He immediately confessed to stealing the carabiner the previous week, and also confessed to the previous attempted burglary, saying he was “testing his wire cutters out on the fence to make sure they worked well”. The store owner identified him as the man responsible for both incidents.

When the man was placed under arrest for two counts of attempted burglary, he was searched incident to arrest, and multiple unopened pieces of mail were located on his person, addressed within 1/2 a mile of their current location.

The suspect stated he had found it on the ground. The mail was solidly dry, however, despite it having been raining for the past 5 hours. Deputies also found bolt cutters on his person, adding “making or possessing burglary tools” to his ever-growing list of charges.

In all, he is currently being held in the Thurston County Jail on four felonies – attempted burglary, possession stolen mail, possession of instruments of financial fraud, and possession of stolen property in the 2nd degree, as well as misdemeanor possession of burglary tools and possession of auto theft tools.

Vandals target homes of Olympia councilmembers

Screenshot from Jessica Bateman’s home security video, obtained from the Olympia Police Department.

Vandals struck in the early morning hours of Saturday Oct. 31, at the homes of Olympia City Councilmembers Clark Gilman and Jessica Bateman, who live on opposite sides of the city. The two homes, and cars in Gilman’s driveway, were vandalized with white paint from a bottle.

Councilmember Jessica Bateman’s home on Olympia’s eastside was vandalized around 5:00 am on Saturday morning. In security video she provided to OPD, a suspect can be seen approaching the front porch of Bateman’s residence, and squeezing white paint from a bottle on the house, which eventually covers the camera.

The responding police officer estimated damage to Councilmember Bateman’s home at around $1000, which would make it a felony malicious mischief case if the suspect were to be caught. They were wearing a full face mask and gloves, and cannot be identified by the camera footage. A squeeze-type bottle filled with “watery, white colored paint” was found near the walkway.

Later in the day Saturday, officers responded to Councilmember Clark Gilman’s home in West Olympia. Gilman told officers that his neighbor had notified him of similar damage from white paint to his house and two vehicles.

Officers located a bottle in the area identical to the type found in front of Bateman’s residence. The responding officer stated in a report, “Gilman is a
Olympia city government official and was likely targeted due to his position.” Officers also found damage to Gilman’s property to be in the realm of $1000.

Bateman has served on the City Council since 2015, and was just re-elected to that position last year. Her position will likely be vacant soon, however, since she appears to have won election to the State House of Representatives yesterday, defeating former Lacey Police Chief Dusty Pierpoint.

Gilman has served on the City Council since being appointed in 2016 and then re-elected in 2017. He is up for re-election next year.

If anyone has information on the two vandalism cases, they are encouraged to contact Olympia Police, reference case numbers 20-6385 (Bateman) and 20-6390 (Gilman).

Man tries to light house on fire, woman fires shot during Rainier domestic incident

A man is in custody on several charges stemming from a domestic violence incident in Rainier early Monday.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in the 13600 block of 148th Ave SE, near the town of Rainier in rural Thurston County, just before 6:30 am on Monday, Nov. 2.

A female victim told 911 dispatchers that her former roommate and romantic partner was in the house destroying things. He had allegedly thrown her phone when she wanted to call for help, and said that if she called the cops there would a be a “bloodbath”.

He refused to leave after being asked, and became more agitated, which led to him grabbing a propane torch and attempting to light the bedroom carpet on fire, before the victim grabbed the torch away from him. When deputies arrived in the area, the victim had escaped the house and was hiding in the bushes.

The man was compliant with deputies’ commands, though he was agitated, according to the police report. Deputies saw the burn marks on the carpet and it smelled like something freshly burned, according to the police report.

The suspect had called the victim’s daughter during the argument, making threats about a “bloodbath”, which led to the daughter responding to the scene.

When the victim’s daughter arrived, she did not find her mom in the house, but only the suspect, who was yelling and moving towards her. She warned the suspect to leave and back away from her, before she drew a revolver from her pocket and fired a single shot into the ground.

The daughter holds a valid concealed pistol license, and deputies found the firing of the round “appeared to be justified” because she was in fear for her life, due to the suspect’s threats of a “bloodbath”, but also added that they would refer the case to the prosecuting attorney, who could decide to charge the daughter with a crime.

The revolver, four live rounds, one spent casing, the propane torch, and the piece of burned carpet were seized by deputies as evidence. The male suspect was booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of Attempted Arson in the 1st Degree, Unlawful Imprisonment, Interfering with the Reporting of Domestic Violence, and Assault in the 4th Degree.
