Olympia Police Officer Tiffany Coates was awarded the department’s Officer of the Year award at a ceremony held Wednesday evening at Olympia City Hall. The award was presented by members of the American Legion Post No. 3, a local veteran’s association.

Also present for the ceremony (which is normally held at an Olympia City Council meeting) was Interim Police Chief Aaron Jelcick, several of Officer Coates’ patrol partners, her patrol Sergeants, and friends and family. The award was for the year of 2019, but the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the presentation of the award.

Officer Coates graduated from the Washington Criminal Justice Training Academy in June 2017. She first worked as a sheriff’s deputy in Skamania County before being hired as a lateral officer at the Olympia Police Department.

At the Academy, Officer Coates received the prestigious “Patrol Partner” award. This award is voted on by the academy class, with recruits voting for who they would most like to have as back-up on any given patrol call.

Interim Police Chief Aaron Jelcick commended her at Wednesday’s ceremony, saying in part “The Olympia Police Department is fortunate to have Officer Coates with us”.

Wild weather day results in thousands without power

Thunderstorms in the morning, followed by high wind in the afternoon and evening, resulted in thousands of Thurston County residents being left without power on Tuesday.

The first round of crazy weather came in the early morning hours when thunderstorms came through the area. These involved localized high winds, heavy rain, hail, and of course, thunder and lightning. Power outages were reported in the South Bay and East Olympia areas.

Then, a wind advisory took effect at noon and gusts as high as 45 mph followed, resulting in widespread power outages. The largest outages were reported in the Tumwater Hill, Nisqually, and Littlerock/Maytown areas, though many small outages of less than 50 customers were also reported by PSE.

A large tree branch fell on this vehicle on Columbia St SW Tuesday afternoon.

By sunrise on Wednesday, the PSE outage map reported that less than 150 customers were still without power in Thurston County.

Annual statewide earthquake drill set for Thursday morning

The Great Washington Shakeout, the state’s annual earthquake drill that occurs each October, will occur this Thursday, October 15th, at 10:15 am.

Normally, schools and offices of all kinds would take part in the annual event, but with many working from home, it presents a unique opportunity for people to practice what they would do in the event of an earthquake while they’re home.

A video script released by the group putting on the event reads “Stop. This is an earthquake drill. Right now – drop, cover, and hold on. Drop to the ground immediately. Take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table. Hold onto it until the shaking stops.”

With experts saying for years that Washington is due for a strong earthquake, knowing what to do when the ground starts shaking is important. Read more about the Shakeout: https://www.shakeout.org/washington/

Wind Advisory issued as another storm on the way

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Wind Advisory for Thurston County as another fall windstorm is set to impact the area on Tuesday.

A small tree blocks the northbound lane in the 2900 block of Aspinwall Rd NW during a mild windstorm on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020.

The advisory is in effect from 12:00 pm through 6:00 pm Tuesday, October 13.

Meteorologists say to expect sustained southwesterly winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts as high as 45-50 mph.

Winds of this strength have the ability to blow around unsecured objects, as well as cause tree damage that could result in power outages.

If your power is out, report it to Puget Sound Energy (1-888-225-5773). If you spot wires down or trees blocking the roadway, call non-emergency dispatch at (360-704-2740). Do not call dispatch to report that your power is out.

Confirmed: EF-1 tornado touched down Saturday in Grays Harbor County

The National Weather Service confirmed on Monday morning that an EF-1 rated tornado touched down 5 miles southwest of Neilton, WA (in rural Grays Harbor County) around 4:40 am Saturday.

Meteorologists at the NWS office in Seattle had issued a tornado warning for the area after possible lofted debris was sighted on a radar scan, according to a release.

A Quinault Nation Fire official came upon ten downed trees on the Moclips Highway (SR-26) near MP 18 at approximately 5:20 AM, 40 minutes after the radar indicated the possibility of a tornado in the area.

A trained spotter from the National Weather Service visited the area on Sunday, and found damage consistent with 90-mph winds, which would rate the tornado as an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The tornado likely lasted less than two minutes and travelled approximately half a mile, with an estimated width of 30 yards.

Tornadoes in Washington are rare, but not unheard of. We average approximately 2 per year, according to the National Weather Service. Additionally, several tornado warnings were issued in January for this same area of Grays Harbor County, but no actual tornados were reported.

Do you know what to do if a blaring tornado warning pops up on your phone? (They sound like amber alerts) Here’s what to do.
