Man shoots at Yelm officers with “high powered air rifle” following domestic

A 47-year old Yelm man is in custody after he shot at Yelm Police officers with what they described as a “high powered air rifle” while they were investigating a domestic disturbance at his home, according to a report filed by a Yelm officer.

Yelm officers were dispatched to the 9500 block of Longmire Ct SE around 8:00 pm Wednesday for a report of a domestic disturbance. A female called 911 and told dispatchers that her brother shot at her and her roommate with a slingshot and that he was now armed with a BB gun.

Officers arrived on scene and began talking with the victim. While they were doing that the male suspect leaned out of a shed and pointed the “black full size rifle with an optic on top” directly at an officer and fired it. The round struck something in front of the officer.

Officers knew, from what the victim had told 911 dispatchers, that the man was likely armed with a BB gun. They took cover and established a line of communication with the male who was inside the shed.

He ultimately came outside and was taken into custody. He has been identified as Michael K. Diehl. Diehl made his preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Thursday afternoon. The Court found probable cause to charge him with Assault 3rd Degree and two counts of Assault 4th Degree.

The Court set his bail at $5,000 and ordered that if released, he possess no dangerous weapons, to include slingshots, BB guns, or pellet guns. The court also ordered that he undergo an evaluation by a DCR (Designated Crisis Responder) prior to release, among other conditions.

Suspect in Yelm stolen vehicle pursuit escaped from DOC work release last month

The suspect in the pursuit of a stolen vehicle which began in Yelm and ended in Pierce County early Monday morning escaped from a Department of Corrections work release program in March, according to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Jackson of the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect, Miguel Martinez, 23, made his preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon via Zoom. Jackson said that he wasn’t scheduled to be released from DOC custody until May.

Miguel Martinez makes his preliminary court appearance Tuesday in Thurston County Superior Court.

The pursuit began on Hwy 510 near Mud Run Rd in Yelm around 1:00 am Monday. Yelm Police attempted to stop the vehicle and it took off. They continued through Yelm, over the bridge into McKenna, and ended up on SR 507 north of Roy.

The suspect then stopped the vehicle and began holding a knife to his throat. Crisis negotiators were called to the scene, but deputies ended up forcing the suspect out of the vehicle with gas.

The Thurston County Superior Court set Martinez’ bail at $20,000 for the new charges. As of Wednesday morning, he is still in custody at the Thurston County Jail. It’s unclear what would happen if he posted bail, but he would likely just be returned to DOC to finish his prison sentence.

30 pounds of meth recovered in Tumwater narcotics operation

A Thurston County Narcotics Task Force operation in Tumwater late last week resulted in two arrests and the seizure of 30 pounds of methamphetamine, which has an approximate street value of $150,000.

30 pounds of methamphetamine was seized in the operation. It was packed in 30 ziplock-type bags weighing one pound each.

A confidential source assisted detectives in the operation. They met the drug dealers at the Home Depot on Kingswood Drive last Thursday, where they negotiated a price of $2,500 per pound for the meth.

The next day, the confidential source met one of the men at the Comfort Inn on 74th Ave SW to make the exchange. Once the source verified that the full 30 pounds of meth was in the dealer’s vehicle, teams moved in and made the arrest.

Another male involved in the negotiation at Home Depot was also placed into custody and booked into the Thurston County Jail, but was released Monday after prosecutors declined to find probable cause to charge him with a crime.

The male who brought the meth to the hotel has been identified as Hector Diaz-Bucio, of Seattle. He was charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver-Methamphetamine. Diaz-Bucio admitted to detectives that he brought 30 pounds of “Ice” to the hotel. “Ice” is a street term for methamphetamine. He told them that he met with the driver
of the white car parked next to him and they agreed to $2,500 per pound.

Diaz-Bucio made his preliminary court appearance Monday afternoon. He was released on bail shortly after that appearance. Arraignment was set for April 20th.

Hector Diaz-Bucio makes his preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Monday via Zoom.

Detectives seized the pickup truck Diaz-Bucio drove to the hotel. They later served a search warrant on the vehicle. They found 30 ziplock bags, filled with one pound of methamphetamine each, inside two separate gym bags in the vehicle. A random sample field test confirmed that the substance is methamphetamine.

The Thurston County Narcotics Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, deputies with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, and the Washington State Patrol Aviation and K9 units assisted with this operation.

Man arrested after giving two false names during shooting investigation

A suspect is in custody on a new felony charge and multiple warrants after he gave deputies two different false names while they were investigating a possible shooting on Sunday, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Thurston County Superior Court.

Deputies were originally dispatched to the 2400 block of South Bay Rd NE after an off-duty law enforcement officer called 911 and reported that they heard gunshots in the area just after midnight Sunday morning. Deputies checked the area and heard no further gunshots.

They were re-dispatched to the area just before 2:00 am for reports of gunshots coming from a specific address in the 2400 block of South Bay Rd. When deputies arrived at the address, a male came outside frantically stating that a female had just been shot and had left the area in her white Cadillac.

911 dispatchers were able to find a white Cadillac registered to a female who lives at the residence. Olympia Police officers located the vehicle and performed a felony traffic stop at San Francisco Ave NE and Bethel St NE. The female and a male passenger were detained and did not appear to have been shot.

The female told deputies that the two men were fighting, she heard gunshots, and they took off towards Boston Harbor. She said she didn’t know where she planned on going, and that they were “just driving”.

When deputies attempted to identify the male passenger in her car, he provided two different false names. When he finally provided his real name, he showed to have seven active warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and booked into the Thurston County Jail on his warrants as well as Criminal Impersonation 1st Degree for providing the false names.

Detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the shooting. They are searching for the other male involved. There is no probable cause to arrest him but there is reasonable suspicion to stop and detain him for questioning pertaining to the fired shots.
