State Patrol releases identity of man killed in I-5 motorcycle crash Friday

The Washington State Patrol released the identity of the man who was killed Friday morning on I-5 when he was struck by a semi truck on his motorcycle.

WSP Troopers and aid crews were dispatched to the collision just before 10:30 am Friday, on northbound I-5 at the on-ramp from Maytown. The man was pronounced deceased upon their arrival at the scene. He is identified as Royal T. Macias, 29, of Olympia.

The semi truck was travelling in the second-from-the-right lane (lane two of four) when the motorcyclist across cut the gore point on the on-ramp and cut in front of the semi. The semi struck the motorcycle, a 2001 Honda CBR600.

It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the collision. A next-of-kin notification was completed by the Thurston County Coroner’s Office on Friday.

Trooper Ryan Burke, the Public Information Officer for Pierce and Thurston Counties, originally said on Twitter that Troopers were investigating this as a felony hit-and-run case. He later said that this wasn’t the case anymore, and Troopers had determined that only one semi was involved in the collision, not two as previously thought.

29-year-old motorcycle rider killed on I-5 near Maytown after being hit by semi truck

Crews with West Thurston Fire and the Washington State Patrol responded to the area of I-5 northbound near Maytown for a report of a semi vs. motorcycle collision just before 10:30 am on Friday, October 30.

Scanner traffic indicated that a motorcycle had been struck by a semi truck, and the rider was down in the road and appeared to not be moving. Fire crews arrived just minutes later and pronounced the rider deceased.

The deceased has been identified as a 29-year-old male from Olympia, according to WSP Trooper Ryan Burke. His name is currently being withheld pending the notification of a next of kin. The Thurston County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the scene.

Police warn of increased catalytic converter thefts – and the #1 victim is the Prius

Do you drive a Toyota Prius? Might want to take extra precautions to ensure that thieves don’t saw off your catalytic converter.

Olympia Police report that there have been 12 reports of these catalytic converter thefts in the past three weeks alone – and 11 of the victim vehicles have been a Toyota Prius, model years 2002-2009. The thefts are happening all over Thurston County and the Puget Sound, according to OPD.

Thieves jack the cars up, take a power saw to the catalytic converter, saw it off, and they’re gone, all within a matter of minutes. Thieves can then sell the converters to metal recyclers for quick cash, the Police Department said.

An extra-large catalytic converter from a foreign vehicle is worth between $261 and $473, while small, domestic cats can be worth around $100, according to metal recyclers.

If your catalytic converter gets stolen—you’re going to know about it right away. With the cat gone, the exhaust system no longer reduces engine noise. And that makes your car very loud. You will hear loud roaring sound, that will get louder as you push the gas pedal.

If you fall victim to a theft, make sure to file a police report right away, and call 911 if you interrupt the crime while it’s in progress. The odds of getting your converter back are slim, but following case trends can help police officers stop thieves in the act.
